Small update on unit organization and French Old Guard Grenadiers

As I said in my recent post, most of my recent activity in this endeavor has been to clean up some units; this includes revising some battalion compositions to get where I want them (including buying some figures to do so), cleaning up figures bases so they stand better (in my earlier zeal to get figures off their sprus and assembled My original knife work was a little sloppy) and also taking general inventory of all figure poses so I can consider further optimization or revisions.

Part of this was brought about by rethinking the base formations I want each battalion to potentially be staged in.  Basically I want the unit composition to facilitate at least a few potential formations; for example, firing battalions need to have poses to both form a firing line, and a column formation.  A Firing line would be 2 (or in rare cases 3) ranks deep, while a column would be between 12 to 15 troops wide.

Today I finished revision my 2 battalions of French Old Guard Grenadiers, for which I am using Timpo French Grenadiers.

While some view these figures as outdated and point out their limited level of detail, particularly on the rather simply done musket, I like them for their perfect 1/32 scale, great French blue color and tall thick proud bearskins.

I had a fairly good stash of these collected over the years (including about 50 I’ve painted), but just recently bought a few more sets off EBay to finally get my battalions composition where I want it.  Those troops arrived today.

Each battalion has leadership staff of 1 officer, 1 NCO & 2  drummers.

1st battalion: firing line with standing firing poses, backed by marching, with a few ready with bayonet poses to round out the formation. (52 men including command)

2nd battalion: advancing/ready column with advancing & marching poses (52 men including command)

Unfortunately I didn’t think to take pictures when I was reorganizing the figures earlier, but I will post pic ASAP.

Cheers
